Fundraising & Events Team 🎟️🐾

Our Fundraising & Events team is the financial engine that allows us to fund medical care and supplies for our rescue animals. Because we operate across Alberta, we offer both virtual planning roles and hands-on, in-person opportunities!

How you can help:

• Plan & Organize: Brainstorm and coordinate fun initiatives, from online auctions and digital raffles to in-person community events.

• Outreach & Promo: Connect with local businesses for sponsorships/venues, and spread the word to ensure a great turnout.

• Team Onboarding: Help recruit and organize event-day volunteers.

• Event Support: Simply show up! Help us manage booths, sell merch, and chat with the community at local events.

Transportation Team 🚗🐾

Our transport volunteers are the vital moving parts of our rescue! Since we don’t have a physical shelter and operate entirely through foster homes across Alberta, we rely heavily on drivers to get our animals safely to where they need to be.

How you can help:

• Freedom Rides: Pick up animals from intakes, shelters, or surrenders and drive them safely to their new foster homes.

• Vet Appointments: Help busy foster parents by driving animals to and from scheduled veterinary or grooming appointments.

• Supply Delivery: Drop off essential food, crates, and medical supplies to foster homes in your area.

Requirements: Volunteers must have a valid Alberta Driver’s License, daily access to a reliable, insured vehicle, and a safe space in the car for a crate or seatbelt tether. Whether you can do one drive a month or one a week, every mile you drive helps save a life! Apply Here
 

Application Screening & Onboarding Team 📋🔍

Our screening volunteers act as our ultimate matchmakers! Because we want every placement to be a perfect fit, this behind-the-scenes administrative team plays a critical role in vetting and approving potential foster homes and adoptive families.

How you can help:

• Review Applications: Carefully read through incoming foster and adoption applications to see if they align with our rescue’s guidelines and the specific needs of our animals.

• Conduct Interviews: Chat with eager applicants over the phone to discuss their lifestyle, pet history, and what to expect.

• Reference Checks: Reach out to personal, professional, or veterinary references to ensure our animals are going to safe, loving homes.

Foster Coordination Team 🤝❤️

Our Foster Coordinators are the ultimate support system for our rescue network! Because we are entirely foster-based, our foster families are our most valuable asset. This role is all about building relationships, answering questions, and ensuring our fosters feel confident, supported, and appreciated throughout their entire journey.

How you can help:

• Guide & Check-In: Act as the main point of contact for a small group of foster homes, checking in regularly to see how the animals are adjusting and how the families are doing.

• Coordinate Needs: Help foster parents get set up with everything they need, from arranging food and supply drop-offs to helping schedule vet visits.

• Onboard & Welcome: Help welcome newly approved fosters into the Ruff Start family and guide them through their very first placement.

Behavioral & Training Support Team 🎓🐾

Our behavioral and training support volunteers are our unsung heroes! Transitioning into a new home can be overwhelming for rescue animals, and this team provides the expert guidance needed to help fosters and adopters navigate behavioral challenges, setting every animal up for long-term success.

How you can help:

• Offer Expert Guidance: Provide advice, tips, and troubleshooting support to foster homes and adopters dealing with common behaviors like decompression, reactivity, or basic manners.

• Create Resources: Help develop simple training tips, guides, or digital resources that we can share with our community.

• Support Smooth Transitions: Check in with families who have dynamic or sensitive animals to ensure everyone is staying safe, happy, and on the right track.

Our Force-Free Philosophy: At Ruff Start, we are strictly committed to a force-free, positive-reinforcement model. We do not use or advocate for aversive training methods (like balanced training, prong collars, or shock collars).

Digital Support Team 💻✨

Our Digital Support volunteers are the creative engine behind our online presence! Because we are a foster-based rescue operating all across Alberta, our website and social media channels are our physical storefront. This team ensures our message reaches the community, our adoptable animals get noticed, and our daily operations run flawlessly.

How you can help:

• Social Media & Content Creation: Help manage our Instagram and Facebook pages, write engaging captions, and create fun, eye-catching stories or reels to highlight our animals and events.

• Graphic Design: Design digital flyers, adoption promotion graphics, or educational posts using tools like Canva.

• Website Support: Assist with keeping our website up to date.

Photography & Videography Team 📸✨

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but in rescue, a great photo can literally save a life! A beautiful profile picture or a funny TikTok video helps our adoptable animals stand out online and find their forever families much faster.

How you can help:

• Snaps & Videos: Meet up with local foster homes to take high-quality photos or fun videos of our adoptable dogs and cats.

• Event Coverage: Pop by our community events to capture the action, the smiles, and the dogs being adorable.

• Edit & Share: Do a quick edit on your favorite shots and send them over to our digital team to post online.

No Pressure, Just Fun: This is a super casual role! There is zero set schedule—you only help out when you are available. When a foster home near you needs photos and you have a free weekend, you can step up and grab the assignment.
